illustration done for Persephone's Dream Opposition CD. the story is about a boy who drowns himself in the river to wash away his sins. the angel in and of the water has accepted his life and is now 'saving' his soul.
the position of the angel in the cd booklet was joined with the next song, Kindred Soil, to form the two-page illustration showing the skeletons of the forefathers on the shores of the river.
i did a few test renders trying to get the pose for those huge wings right. and trying to get the pose of the boy's body right. never have been happy with the boy's pose - maybe one day when i have too much spare time i'll give it another shot.
here is an interesting aside -- i got hammered by quite a few older people who were offended by the rendition of the angel. they wanted to see the angel done up in 'light' and thought that the concept of the a 'water angel' was hedonistic and offensive. to them, angels MUST equal warmth, light, and love.
interesting how different brains process things, no?

The little boy woke up with the sleep still in his eyes No food was in the kitchen, but he didn't know to cry His mother didn't even seem to know he was alive So he went out searching, didn't know what he would find He had seen the Good Book, couldn't read between the lines He rushed out of the door, and left his fear behind |
He said to the lady with rough hands and soft embrace "Help me find the meaning of my life in this place!" She said, "Son, it's simple, just take my hand and see. I'll take you to the river; how happy you will be." He went down to the river He went down to the river He went down to the river And he jumped right in The water pulled him deeper, he was looking for release But he didn't know the truth would leave him in the arms of peace |
