started out as a rainy-day project i did after i first discovered Roine Stolt's band, The Flower Kings.
i thought it would be fun to make a 'Flower King' and experiment with the concept.
what i came up with the first time around was 'interesting' but nothing really to write home about.
it was more the concept of the image that was valuable, rather than the quality of the artwork.
so the image languished for some time until Phil Brucato (gaming author from D&D) saw it and
saw the potential. he contacted me and asked if i'd consider finishing the illustration for a
project he was working on: Deliria - Fairy Tales for a New Millenium.
with that little bit of extra juice Phil added to the mix, coupled with his enthusiasm, the
Flower King got a petal-lift and some much needed attention. By the time Phil and i got done,
we both were extremely happy with the end results -- Enigmatic, Modern-but-Ancient, and Intelligent --
those were really the concepts we were trying to embody while having fun with color and texture.
the majority of the elements i used in the Flower King are fractals! the spiney twisty ferns,
seed pods, and other bits of flora are all fractals that i discovered in xenodream. they
worked perfectly for this project.
i'm like that crow who finds pretty shiney objects
and brings them back to the nest to admire. LOL
well, at least i'm consistant!
